Community School

What Is a Community School?
At Nelson, we are proud to be a Community School—a public school that goes beyond academics to support the whole child and the entire family. Community Schools are built on strong partnerships between the school and local organizations, creating a supportive, student-centered environment from pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.
Our Community School model focuses on:
-
Academic Excellence through extended learning opportunities and high-quality instruction.
-
Whole-Child Engagement by integrating health, mental wellness, and social-emotional support.
-
Family & Community Partnership by ensuring families are actively involved in school decision-making.
By addressing barriers to learning and expanding access to services such as nurses, counselors, and social workers, we help close opportunity gaps and promote equitable outcomes. Our school acts as a community hub, a safe, welcoming space where students and families can thrive together.
Through collaborative leadership and shared decision-making, Nelson embraces the voices of students, families, and the broader community. Together, we create a learning environment that is healing-centered, inclusive, and empowering for all.
