Curriculum
At Nelson, we are committed to ensuring all students become the best they can be socially, emotionally, and intellectually by learning in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. Through high-quality instruction, meaningful learning experiences, and strong relationships, students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive.
LITERACY
Nelson utilizes Benchmark Advance to provide standards-aligned instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students engage in structured literacy, foundational reading skills, vocabulary development, comprehension, and writing experiences that foster critical thinking and a lifelong love of learning.
MATHEMATICS
Using Amplify Desmos Math, students develop conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning aligned to the California Common Core State Standards. Through rich mathematical discourse, real-world applications, and collaborative learning experiences, students build confidence as mathematicians.
SCIENCE
Through Twig Science, students engage in hands-on, inquiry-based learning aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Lessons encourage students to investigate, question, collaborate, and apply scientific thinking as they explore life, physical, earth, and environmental sciences.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Using the Savvas Social Studies curriculum, students explore history, geography, civics, economics, and culture through an inquiry-based approach. Lessons encourage students to think critically, analyze multiple perspectives, and develop an understanding of their role as informed and responsible citizens.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
All students participate in a comprehensive physical education program taught by a credentialed PE specialist. Students develop movement skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy habits, and confidence through engaging and active learning experiences.
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
Nelson values creativity and self-expression through the arts. Students participate in the Art Masters program, visual and performing arts assemblies, and a variety of enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Students in grades 1–3 receive weekly music instruction, building foundational skills in rhythm, movement, singing, and musical appreciation.
ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Learning extends beyond the classroom through STEM experiences, coding, leadership opportunities, after-school enrichment programs, athletics, and community partnerships. Programs such as Pure Game help students develop teamwork, leadership, character, and healthy habits while fostering a strong sense of belonging and school connectedness.
